Beeee-autiful. Honey harvest #1

Bee Keeping with Dave from kettleoffish on Vimeo.

Here is a great video that Mr. Adam Record put together of Dave with his Bees in South Ogden. I couldn't wait to share.

This is Dave's 2nd year experimenting and learning about bee keeping. It's our first year and first attempt at getting honey from them.!

This is called a top bar hive, where the bees can make their combs all naturally like they would in nature. Some hives, like the box hives that are more popular, have a comb pattern that the bees build onto.

This hive is in his grandpa Carter's front yard. Ogden has a longer growing season than cold Kamas so Dave wanted to experiment and have one here, and the other closer to us in Kamas. Grandpa was a beekeeper for many years and enjoys having them and Dave buzzing around. He's such a cute, wise old man.

There is capped and uncapped honey combs. You are supposed to wait until it is capped, when the bees recipe is prime for eating. Supposedly the uncapped is more watery and can spoil over time, unlike the other. The comb that Dave cut was half capped.

There are several techniques to separate the honey. Dave chose a simple one for now, where you cut pieces of comb off and crush them up in a jar. Then you use the ever so handy duct tape to fasten screen to the jar and the jar to another jar. Tip it upside down in a sunny spot and VIOLA!! First batch of home made honey. Isn't that pretty.? It's been a fun hobby for our family and now we can finally taste the results....MMMMM!

Sleep, houses and goodbye to July.

Ohhhh. Mercy. This summer has been just a flying. Can you believe AUGUST is literally right around the corner.??
New baby in May definitely started things into a whirlwind. Little Harper Lee has been a doll face! She is my best eater and sleeper thus far. Three is a charm they say, right.? She is 11 wks now and has been sleeping through the night for a couple weeks.
Baby sleep + mom sleep = a happy home.! Really though, anyone would feel 10,000 times less zombie and more ready to rock n roll when they have consecutive hours of sleep a night. mmm. Just talking about it makes me want to crawl in bed right now and snuggle asleep. I have come to the conclusion that I need my sleep. I love my sleep.

Dave on the other hand is a TOTAL night owl. Whether it's full on, school in session, and he has to be to work by 7am or it's summer and he's at the depot loading concrete and trees all day. He will go to bed after midnight every night (after he snuggles me to sleep, of course.) And, some how he remains one of the most patient people I've ever met.
In my book of all knowing, that just isn't right. Sleep and patience go hand and hand with sanity right there with them.
With that said, I'm glad I married a patient one because I've been staying up much too late these days.

Dave and I have been practicing our patience A LOT the last couple months as we continue the search for our perfect house. Last night, we took a look at 3 more houses. One in Kamas and two in Heber. All had cons that heavily out weighed their pros. On the drive back, I thought a lot. Dave had come straight from work to meet our agent, me and the kids in Heber. So, we had two vehicles and I drove the truck home peacefully alone. It was rare and so nice.
I counted in my head all the houses that we had physically gone to and looked through without the kids and mostly with kids in tow....TWENTY. I counted twenty houses that are now on the "just not for us" list.
Finding and deciding on a house that we both love has been tough. The first couple of weeks were filled with excitement and hope and now, after sifting through hundreds of houses, both have dimmed a bit.
Our current house that we are living in, we are renting and need to be out of by Aug. 31st. Our lease is up then and we thought we would have found a house by now so there were renters scheduled and ready to move in by September. Kind of crazy how things haven't worked out for us with our two offers that we've already made in the meantime.
We are going off faith that THEE Carter house is out there and that these other two houses or two hundred houses just weren't right for our family. The timing is getting a little close for comfort though. Ideally we would like to move once from here to a house that we've bought. But, if a a week or so go by without an offer on the table, we will need to find another temp rental.
How picky is too picky. So many houses I LOVE but then they are in the wrong location or don't have a decent kitchen, garage, or have way to much work to be done.

I'm excited/anxious to see what pops up and where we finally decide to settle. We both love that old charmer type house that is renovated with decent space inside and out. Not too close to other houses. Dave wants chickens, goats and maybe even a moo cow someday. Kamas turned us country! Give and take..So we shall see.
The kids kind of get what's going on. They've loved running around the different houses and announcing why they like or don't want to live in certain ones. Seems that they've also helped themselves to using the restroom in most all the houses we've toured. Which sometimes gets interesting when there's no toilet paper, or maybe no running water.

Our house is out there and we're determined to find it, just not sure when.

Here our some more pics from our fabulous JULY. Which is the hands down my favorite month..along with Sept. and Oct. and well December too. :)

Dave's parents gave us season passes to Lagoon. Sister Shelly ended up buying one and we've had some good times this summer!

My Oregonian friend Sara was driving to Iowa and decided to stop by and say hi.

My Oregonian cousin Ash and her kids came for a visit.

We had our annual camping trip to Lava Hot Springs with the whole FAM. Dave surprised us all and fish tail braided mine and Roma's hair. The standard Grandma with a puzzle. Kids riding bikes. Lava town and watching the tubers. Harper Lee's first experience in the wilderness. Always look forward to this trip.! Love the fam!

Just another day in Kamas. Out to eat at the Gateway Grill.

some catch up summer lovin

Oh my, how things have happened since I last wrote.
Some great things in fact. Events and happenings that should really deserve a post of their own.
Of course that won't be happening. Life in these parts is fast moving and full of DVR'd soccer games. Can I just say Holy U.S.A.!!! Such an exciting women's world cup! Finals will be this Sunday VS. Japan....Ya'll better be watching, cuz this, my friends, IS OUR YEAR TO TAKE THE GOLD.

Now before July gets even more exciting, I must get a few of these fabulous events documented.
Pics and bullets will be my choice of weapons for tonight.
-Beautiful sister has a beautiful wedding on June 25th at Woodland park in Farmington. It was a mere 1025 degrees outside and somehow we all survived. Even all the beta's in the centerpieces made it through.

-July 1st came and went and we did NOT have to relocate. New date to be out of this house is Sept 1st. Still looking like crazy for a home that Dave and I both love and want to buy.
-Sunday July 3rd- Miss Harper Lee was blessed at our church by Dave. There were two baby blessings that day so the place was packed. Dave did a great job. The spirit was strong and Harper stayed asleep. She wore the same beautiful dress that I was blessed in as well as her big sister Roma. My grandma Bateman made it along with booties, a slip, and a bonnet 29 years ago. WOW. The sad part is that Shelly was the photographer that day and I don't have any of the pictures yet.
Here is the announcement and a picture of Harper and her Great grandma Bateman.

-After Harper's blessing, we invited everyone over for a pulled pork lunch and a birthday party for Roma girl. She is our little sparkler, born on the 4th of July.
Such a SWEET, fun girl. Everyone loves to play with her. She's got some great face expressions!

Oh shoot. Baby needs the mama. Guess I'll post and continue on later. .. LOVING the summer. !!

3 best hours of the week?

Wooooeee. Baby.
I'm tired. Since I set that baby Harper-time bomb, down to sleep, I've been going full speed on the computer. For the past hour and bit I've been reading about the women's world cup, catching up on fb and blogs, and watching a couple youtube music vids. I get going and don't want to relax or breathe because I KNOW that once I do, that precious "bomb" will wake back up and want me, need me.
Dave just got off work and gave me a ring. I paused my crazy speed reading, looked up and realized that it was nearly 11pm.
CLOCKS ARE WHAT MAKE ME TIRED> Blasted clocks make the world in such a hurry. How many days do you wish that there were just a few more hours before it was too late and time for bed.? ME?...All the time lately. Good or bad? I'm not sure, but it's the truth.

SO..before things tick into tomorrow (I can hear her stirring..aaah), let me rewind to---->

SUNDAY. Sunday. Oh blessed Sunday.

As most of you know I am a church goer. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints...A Mormon.
So, this past Sunday, Dave had to work. It's always a bummer when Dave works but specially on Sundays. It's tough to make it to church and then make it through church with 3 kids under 5 without him. So Sunday morning, things were slow. Waking up, breakfast, cleaning up breakfast and changing pooopy diaper after pooopy diaper. I kind of decided that we weren't going to make it to church this time and it was ok because Dave was gone and I just had a baby and yadda yadda. I was making up excuses and totally self talking myself into relaxing the day away.
11 o'clock came and went-we were supposed to be there and I started feeling a little guilty about being home. Like my shoulder devil was getting the best of me or something. Seriously...?! I let out a big sigh, looked at us all un-showered and decided to get my sergeant hustle voice on and get us out the door ASAP, with or without our best faces and hairdos.
Needless to say, we were still over a hour late but, we made it to church.

The crazy hilarious and actually sad part about this story takes place in sacrament. The kids and I sat in a side pew behind a young mom, and her two kids. The grandpa was sitting with them as well but showed little interaction throughout the mtg.
THIS mom had her hands full.! More so than myself this time around.
She had a baby boy-6 mths and an almost 2 year old girl. The little girl was leaning over the bench at us with oily chip hands, reaching for my kids. Grabbing their heads, saying baby and reaching for Harper's head. She was off the bench, up the bench, leaning clear over the bench, trying to turn us and everything with in grasp orange with her snack residue. The mom was holding the baby and would say, so calmly, "Don't touch them. Sit down. Turn around please, " and the two year old would turn to her mom and get the meanest little stink eye on and growl, "NO, don't, no my baby!" Then she would try and hit her mom in the head.
I don't even know what was said over the pulpit, at all, because we were front row to this over sized talking baby with mad aggression skills.
Mom took her out twice, came back and still sat calm telling the girl to "please sit down...stop, etc." Finally this little girl transformed into anger baby/goat and began ramming her head into the pew in front of them. WHAM. Then WHAM again. With punches in between each head ram.
I was dying.! My kids were stunned.
This poor mom and kids.! WHERE WAS HER HUSBAND? WHY wasn't grandpa helping. I can't help her.? WHY ARE WE HERE WITH KIDS again..? During lunchtime and nap?? Oh my goodness.
I really couldn't help it but I started laughing. Kind of internal unstoppable giggles.
EVERY mom has been there. Kind of. Finding humor in stress helps me deal. Church is rough with little ones, and that's a fact. Even with a hands on dad on your side.
We find strength in obedience and faith. By putting ourselves in places and around people that we know will make us and our kids better.

I also know that...
there is a time and a season for everything and it hit me that my season of "hall and mother's room church" has just begun...again.

gooooood night.
PS. The church is true. ;)

Slow motion.

For one, my internet is SOOOOO slow right now. What's the dealeo?
Sitting here waiting for a mormon message to load on Utube. I watched it a couple of days ago on my phone and was hoping to see it full screen. Ironically, the video that is STILL loading is recorded in very slow motion. So, I'm trying to rush a video with a message about not rushing. :) Check it out here.
Such a great reminder to look up and fully enjoy what matters most. As I say, to suck it ALL in.

Yesterday I made rhodes rolls. (WAY to many BTW, because I was expecting company for dinner, then they couldn't make it.)
I put two balls and sometimes three in a bigger muffin tin, so that you have pull apart rolls. mmmmm! I have come to the conclusion that homemade bread and rhodes rolls are better than a dessert.! Warm yummy bread is up there on my top 5 favorite things to eat and smell for that matter!
Today I pressed one of those left over rolls right up to my nose and took a good, long sniff. haha.
I was reminded that this was something I used to do often as a child. I would squish a slice of grandmas bread to my nose and breathe it for a bit.
Kind of funny, YES. But I am kind of a "smeller" of sorts.
Tide laundry detergent
babies necks
babies.
wet or cold concrete
cut grass..Just to name a few.

Ok, so my food spoke today.

Well here are a couple pics from today.
The kids and I have a new favorite place to walk/bike to each day while baby takes her nap in the stroller. Its close to our house. Beautiful HUGE trees, a stream and lots of open fields. We have a horse path that goes around our neighborhood so we think it's pretty fun to go "off road" every so often while cruising around the block.

While we were here, eating granola bars on a not so big rock, baby Harper started to stir around and wake up.
The kids raced to pull the shade off the stroller so they could give her a binkie.
When Roma saw Harper and noticed the cute outfit she was wearing. She looked at me and said, " OH my gosh, I love that little polka dot shirt.. Ohhhh. I want to borrow that." It was dang funny and cute. *Already wanting to "borrow" sisters clothes.
AARG. This won't even publish.
